The Icon of the Resurrection is that of the descent into hell which occupy the lower part of the icon. The dense darkness of the background is like that of the cave of the Nativity, Golgotha and the black waters of the Jordan River. The darkness represents the abysses of the powers of evil where Christ, "light that shines in the darkness" enters to save humanity by stepping on the gates of hell and uncovering the tombs.

Christ in royal dress, as well as on Mount Tabor, dominates the center of the icon in the foreground. With His descent and ascent from the underworld he powerfully draws the progenitors of humanity (Adam and Eve) to him, takes them by the wrist and restores their heartbeat. Behind Adam are David, Solomon and John the Baptist. Sometimes Moses is also represented with the tables of the law.

Following Eve is humanity which was unable to know Christ having lived before his earthly birth.

Everyone recognizes in Christ the One who saves from evil, from a damnation that seemed eternal and who with him enter the Paschal glory.

So that with one voice we can all sing: << Christ is Risen from the dead; with death he defeated death and to those who lay in the tombs he made the gift of life >>.
