In the Byzantine iconographic representation the Crucifix is never represented in its realism of the flesh or in agony, even if Christ died he did not lose His royal and divine nobility, he remains the Word and eternal life.
In the Byzantine liturgy the following troparium is sung, in which the two perspectives, that of glory and that of suffering, intertwine and complete each other: << Today the One who made the earth emerge from the waters is nailed to the wood. The King of angels is crowned with thorns. He who envelops the sky with clouds is shrouded in a mendacious purple. He receives a slap in the face who gave Adam liberation in the Jordan. The Bridegroom of the Church is pierced by nails. The Son of the Virgin is pierced by a spear. We worship His Passion, or Christ. Also show us your Resurrection! >>.
At the sides of the Cross are the witnesses of the suffering and glory of Christ: in two groups we see, on the one hand, Mary and the women who followed Jesus and, on the other, the beloved disciple and the centurion.
At the lower level we observe that the crucifix is planted on a small mountain: it is Golgotha, the place of the skull, where according to the Jewish tradition the first man, Adam, was buried, is depicted at the foot of the cross. In some icons the blood that flows from the body of Christ reaches and wets the skull of Adam. Thus the saving fruit of Christ's death on the Cross is beautifully portrayed.
