Born in Kursk in Russia in 1759 to rich and devoted parents, he lost his father at the age of 4 and his mother took over his spiritual education and upbringing. Until the age of 10 he was saved twice by God's grace from certain death. His love for God was complete from his childhood. At the age of 19 he went to a commune in the Sarov desert as a monk, under the leadership of Joseph the Elder. He served all degrees of deaconry, studied the Bible and many patristic and ascetic books. He went to the Sarov Desert to become an ascetic. Three years later he fell ill with dropsy and was saved by the intervention of the Virgin Mary.

On the site of his treatment a sacred temple was built with his assistance. In 1786 he was called Seraphim because of his zeal for Jesus and was later ordained a deacon. Seven years later, he became a priest, without abandoning his rigorous monastic life. St. Seraphim became known for his spiritual sermons and for his countless miracles.
